Summary

Heartbreaking。 A tough read。

A lot of cliffhangers mid book, on this account after *something* terrible happend you have to read 4 chapters of the part of the 'past', while that *something* is in the back of your mind。 I felt too frustrated and anxious to read it in one go and the ending was just depressing and brusque。 On a good note I could relate a lot with the MC, partially the mother as well, but in the end I'm just glad I finish this book。 A lot of cliffhangers mid book, on this account after *something* terrible happend you have to read 4 chapters of the part of the 'past', while that *something* is in the back of your mind。 I felt too frustrated and anxious to read it in one go and the ending was just depressing and brusque。 On a good note I could relate a lot with the MC, partially the mother as well, but in the end I'm just glad I finish this book。 。。。more

Genuinely one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve ever read。 Wouldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t so beautifully written。 Heart wrenching from start to finish

Young Mungo is a cross between "Shuggie Bain" and a much-shorter "A Little Life"。 While Stuart absolutely excels in describing tangential elements of Glaswegian life (I especially enjoyed a lengthy description of university students in Scotland), the story follows a very well-beaten and predictable path。 Young Mungo is a cross between "Shuggie Bain" and a much-shorter "A Little Life"。 While Stuart absolutely excels in describing tangential elements of Glaswegian life (I especially enjoyed a lengthy description of university students in Scotland), the story follows a very well-beaten and predictable path。 。。。more

I’m not usually one for fiction, however this was a book for this month’s book club。 I can appreciate that other readers may love the descriptiveness of a good fiction novel, however I was frustrated by the very slow start。 Things did pick up though with about 150 pages left to go, and it was only then that I found myself wanting to read on to find out what would be coming next。 Having said that, again, I’m more a non-fiction memoir/biography fan… but some others in my book club have absolutely I’m not usually one for fiction, however this was a book for this month’s book club。 I can appreciate that other readers may love the descriptiveness of a good fiction novel, however I was frustrated by the very slow start。 Things did pick up though with about 150 pages left to go, and it was only then that I found myself wanting to read on to find out what would be coming next。 Having said that, again, I’m more a non-fiction memoir/biography fan… but some others in my book club have absolutely loved this book, as well as Shuggie Bain! 。。。more

This book is a devastating portrait of a time and place in which being gay often meant a life of continued tragedy, loneliness, and violence。 This book is not an easy read, but it never fetishizes gay suffering nor shies away from the dark reality of life in that particular world。 If I had one critique, it’s that it’s maybe 50 pages too long, but the prose is beautifully written and the cast of supporting characters were well crafted。 The gay experience for many people is a distant cry from the This book is a devastating portrait of a time and place in which being gay often meant a life of continued tragedy, loneliness, and violence。 This book is not an easy read, but it never fetishizes gay suffering nor shies away from the dark reality of life in that particular world。 If I had one critique, it’s that it’s maybe 50 pages too long, but the prose is beautifully written and the cast of supporting characters were well crafted。 The gay experience for many people is a distant cry from the cotton candy fantasy worlds of the Ken-doll accessories featured in the bookstagram-popular gay romance novels of today, and I’m grateful for this book for reminding its readers of that。 We’ve come a long way but we shouldn’t forget where we came from。 。。。more

The story told was tragic, appalling and heart-twisting and yet hinted at hope。 For me, the local idioms were hard to follow。 Not my usual genre, but a thoughtful read。3。5 ⭐️

This book had a really slow start from the beginning。 I only started to get invested when I hit the back end of the book。 The jumping back and forth from flashbacks to current day was not something I initially enjoyed。 It played out well by the end though。 That being said, it was such a sad story that had me hoping for even the slightest bit of something good to happen to the main character。 Mungo was so innocent but was constantly met with cruelty and abuse by virtually everyone that came into This book had a really slow start from the beginning。 I only started to get invested when I hit the back end of the book。 The jumping back and forth from flashbacks to current day was not something I initially enjoyed。 It played out well by the end though。 That being said, it was such a sad story that had me hoping for even the slightest bit of something good to happen to the main character。 Mungo was so innocent but was constantly met with cruelty and abuse by virtually everyone that came into his life。 So many important themes throughout the book that were tied together really well by the end。 The author did a great job displaying the struggle it takes to walk away from family when they fail to accept who you are。 He also portrayed the level of ignorance people possess towards individuals that are gay well。 。。。more

This one was a struggle to read。 Not because of the writing, but the story does seem to plod on a bit before things begin to take shape (it goes through every day living), but also because the subject matter is difficult。 Dealing with one's sexuality as a teenager in an environment where culture and religion play a BIG role, as well as the socio-economic status of one's family and how that affects life in general and the choices presented。 This one was a struggle to read。 Not because of the writing, but the story does seem to plod on a bit before things begin to take shape (it goes through every day living), but also because the subject matter is difficult。 Dealing with one's sexuality as a teenager in an environment where culture and religion play a BIG role, as well as the socio-economic status of one's family and how that affects life in general and the choices presented。 。。。more

💔 this one took me a while to get into - the first half mimicked shuggie bain quite closely and i was worried the boom would be an imitation of stuart’s earlier book。 the second half of the book hooked me。 devastating & beautiful, stuart has written another wonderful tale

i just wanna write this so i personally remember my thoughts。 this book was good, but not like shuggie bain。 I felt there was potentially too much trauma。。。sections that were incredibly difficult to read。

The tension is felt from the beginning of this book。 Societal, family broken by poverty, alcohol and much more。 Essentially Mungo and his life as a young gay man living in Glasgow。 Brutal, heartbreaking and beautiful。 I longed for his happiness。 A book I did not want to end。

I will be indeed privileged if I read another novel this year as outstanding as this one!I came to this without having read Douglas Stuart's earlier novel, the widely acclaimed and award winning "Shuggie Bain" so I wasn't too sure what to expect in his depiction of working-class Glasgow of the early 1980s。 At first, the heavy emphasis on the Glaswegian Scottish dialect was a little difficult to get a hang of。 Wouldn't call it phonetic, so I had to carefully work through it。 But after a chapter o I will be indeed privileged if I read another novel this year as outstanding as this one!I came to this without having read Douglas Stuart's earlier novel, the widely acclaimed and award winning "Shuggie Bain" so I wasn't too sure what to expect in his depiction of working-class Glasgow of the early 1980s。 At first, the heavy emphasis on the Glaswegian Scottish dialect was a little difficult to get a hang of。 Wouldn't call it phonetic, so I had to carefully work through it。 But after a chapter or two I was totally engrossed, not only in the gripping storyline but in the beauty of Stuart's prose。This is a masterful novel, beautifully crafted and skillfully constructed in the way the story moves from past to present and present to past in telling young Mungo's story。 A brutal story no boy should ever have to go through in life。 All the characters are compelling。 Most you would never want to know but by books end, they leave such an impression that you are glad to have met them, if only in the nature of this book。Mungo's close sister who will soon leave to better herself; the drunken sluttish mother who is touching in her own pathetic way; the maniacal older brother ready to light the fuse at any given moment; the lonely gay neighbor (Poor-Wee-Chickie)- the subject of constant ridicule, who is a remarkably strong character but not strong enough to emigrate with the boy he loved when he had the chance ("Och, I had a hunner good reasons back then, none of them make much sense now。 Usual shite: ma mammy wisnae well, ma daddy never came back from the war, ma sister would be left to cope by herself, I didnae look guid in short trousers。 Utter nonsense I telt myself to cover my fear。 Australia! My wee arsehole was twitching like a rabbit's nose。")And the two disgusting child molesters who, at his mother's urging, take Mungo on a camping excursion to the countryside to make "a man of him" and play such an integral role in framing the novel。I had forgotten how tribal Glasgow was during this period。 The hatred and intolerance between Protestants and Catholics in the city appear even worse than in either Belfast or Derry。 And what could be worse than a scruffy Protestant boy (Mungo) falling in love with the stick out ears Catholic boy (James)?! The author paints a savage but quite beautiful and engrossing portrait of the relationship and the effect on their environment。 But you fear for these boys as you know both sides of the conflict will come between a rare scene of love and compatibility in a such an inhospitable neighborhood as Stuart's grim Glasgow。 This is a challenging book which certainly won't appeal to all tastes。 The savagery is disturbing, and I was dreading the ending with what was to happen。 But in a confronting conclusion, Stuart's artistry and his skill with his characters and their predicaments, a light appears through the darkness。 And even possibly a new beginning for Mungo and James far away in a place where they will experience the love and respect they deserve。An easy selection to add to my "to read" list: "Shuggie Bain" by Douglas Stuart。 。。。more
